About Us

Makerere University School of Public Health Center for Prevention of Trauma, Injury and Disability (MAKSPH-CTRIAD) is the only one of its kind in East and Central Africa dedicated exclusively to research on injury prevention. The Center’s focus is on the chronic consequences of trauma, injuries, and disability across the lifespan. It has a track record of local and international collaboration, generating evidence that has informed several policy changes in Uganda. The Center generates more than half of the injury research evidence in the country, most of which has informed policy. The Center’s focus is on unintentional injuries, intentional (violence), emergency medical services, occupational safety, disability, and rehabilitation. Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of injuries, the Center works collaboratively with different stakeholders and partners ranging from government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), academic institutions, and communities to co-create and implement solutions that protect lives and livelihoods.

MakSPH-CTRIAD strives to inform effective prevention strategies, strengthen health systems, and promote resilient, injury-free communities across Uganda and beyond

Innovation

We aim for originality, creativity, and novelty in thinking; pioneering research methodological approaches that allow the pursuit of innovative solutions to advance injury research.

Innovation

We strive to address the current injury burden through the generation of new knowledge using methodologies that align with the current and future technological approaches.

Transparency

We are accountable for our decisions and use of resources, regularly sharing updates with funders, communities, and government institutions in the best and acceptable means.

Transparency

We believe that openness is key to shared and collective responsibility.

Collaboration:

We recognize the multidisciplinary need for injury prevention, acknowledging the fact that no single sector or organization can meaningfully prevent injuries.

Collaboration

Therefore, we actively foster partnerships across institutions and local and global communities to co-create knowledge, share resources, and achieve common goals. We believe that meaningful collaboration enhances the quality, relevance, and reach of our research.

Relevance

We strive to conduct research that is relevant and resonates with the current global community's needs.

Relevance

We aim to engage communities using different appropriate platforms to ensure their needs are understood and solutions generated using evidence-informed approaches. We strongly believe that the effectiveness of our work depends on how well it resonates with the needs of stakeholders, from local communities to policymakers.

Equity and Inclusion

We strive to eliminate barriers to participation, promote fairness in opportunity and treatment, and ensure that our research is inclusive, responsive, and beneficial to all communities.

Strengthening Road Safety Reporting: CTRIAD Hosts Journalists in Hoima
Research assistants collecting data on speed and helmet use
VHTs from kasenyi community participate in a simulation training on how to handle a burns injury
Research assistant in mayuge district make a presentation of water bodies in their community during drowning prevention training

Evidence-Based Training initiatives

These targeted training programs translate research findings into practical interventions addressing critical public health threats like road traffic injuries, burn related trauma and drowning. Developed through research, each initiative equips the relevant stakeholders with context-specific knowledge and skills to reduce preventable harm and strengthen community resilience.
