Integrating Community-based Participatory Research and Design Approach in Promotion of Healthier Societies short course

In February 2023, TRIAD Unit sent out a call of application for a short course in “Integrating Community Based Participatory Research and Design Approach in Promoting of Healthier Societies” where fifteen (15) applications were received.

From 13th to 15th March 2023, the Makerere University School of Public Health, Design without Boarders and The George Institute of Global Health UK organized the three-days short course training. The aim of the training was to develop the capacity of researchers and practitioners working in the field of injury prevention to effectively utilize strategies from community based participatory research (CBPR) and human centered design (HCD) approaches in order to enable individuals, communities and health systems to have a maximum impact in creating healthier societies.

The participants were equipped with skills in describing the burden of unintentional childhood injuries including risks and hazards especially in home environment; developing a strong foundation in community based participatory research and human centered design frameworks and concepts and how to apply them; distinguish between CBPR and HCD methods and their integration as applied to the development of unintentional injury prevention programmes; apply mixed methods approaches including novel techniques such as photo-voice, to assess the risk of unintentional childhood injuries; and evaluating how CBPR and HCD methods contribute to the promotion of healthy societies.
