RECOMMENDATIONS TO ADDRESS ROAD SITUATION IN UGANDA

To address road traffic fatalities in Uganda, Mr. Jimmy Osuret-a research associate at Makerere University makes the following recommendations after carrying out a study in the East African Country
- Reduce urban speed limit to less than 50 km/hr, preferably 30km/hr or less for urban locations with increased pedestrian activity
- Lower blood alcohol content limit (0.05 g/dl or below) for the general population
- Lower blood alcohol content limit(0.02 g/dl or below) for novice or young drivers
- Require the fastening of helmets by motorcycle riders (drivers and passengers)
- Establish helmet standards for children based on age
- Enforce existing helmet laws
- Enforce existing seatbelt laws for both front and rear-seat road users
- Ensure children are protected by a child restraint law
- Transport planning and roads should prioritize pedestrians
- Inclusion of safe crossing points and pedestrian walkways
- Establish and implement a road crash data base system
